Don't forget about premise registration and individual animal identification.  This will provide
opportunities for people wishing to age and source verify cattle.  We still are waiting for the
final word on exactly how the program will work.  There are several companies that will help
in marketing those cattle.  We will try to keep current on information as it becomes available.
BVD ear notch testing is another tool that is available.  The purpose of testing is to identify
those animals which are persistently infected (PI) with BVD.  There is a lot of good data on
the financial impact of PI cattle in your herd.  It may be a good place to start by looking at
your replacement heifers.  Don't hesitate to call if you have questions.
As we go into late summer and early fall we need to be thinking about
weaning spring born calves.  This may require pre-wean vaccinations
so it would be a good idea to review those programs.

This would be an excellent time to be thinking about pregnancy testing
cows to help you decide how to handle those that are open.

You also need to remember that cows may need some vaccines in the
fall and so a good review of your vaccination program may eliminate
having to catch cows again.

As winter feedstuffs are harvested, they should be tested for nutrient
content and for toxins if they are types of feed that are prone to
problems.
Calf scours can be attributed to a variety of different bacterial and
viral organisms. Prevention is your best bet in controlling this
disease. By keeping your calving area clean and dry, keeping older
calves and newborn calves separate, and ensuring that the calves
get colostrum within the first 12 hours after birth you can reduce the
probability that your calves end up with scours.

Scour vaccines, such as Guardian, are improving. Come in and visit
with us about a complete scour prevention and treatment program.
